Liverpool are hoping to avoid a repeat performance that they had against Manchester City in the FA Cup when they travel to Paris to take on PSG in the Champions League. Arne Slot was upbeat in his press conference in spite of the recent run of poor results, saying that Liverpool have a history of famous wins in the competition, and that he expects a positive response from the club. The boss also confirms that Alexander Isak will be available to come off the bench in the match.
A Rich History
Slot points to a long list of results this season and also in the past that the Reds can draw on for inspiration.
"The answer is already in the history of Liverpool, but it is easier said than done. We have shown too many times the face we saw for 20 minutes at Man City. Usually, it is only five or 10 minutes. This group has shown it can come back after setbacks. Apart from the quality my team has, my team have shown many times in big games - apart from two at the Etihad - that we are able to compete with the best teams in Europe. This club has also shown it can do very special things in difficult moments, and if we can bring this game to Anfield, as we saw last season and many times, most recently against Galatasaray, we played the best game of our season.”
Turning Negative Into Positive
Slot also believes that the Reds can turn all the negative energy from the Man City match into positive vibes vs PSG with a second chance to put together a solid performance.
“I just look at the challenge itself, and a nice one because, in football, it's sometimes also nice to get a second chance. In life [and] in general, it's nice to get a second chance,” he said. “And as I said, [Manchester] City and Paris Saint-Germain are quite comparable… because of the quality they are having and the style of play they want to have, or they have. So, it's another chance for us to show that we are not the team that we were [during the] 20 minutes that we prefer to forget in the Etihad, but we were the team in the first 35 minutes.
Isak Is Back
Liverpool are expected to get a boost from the return of Swedish striker Alexander Isak to the bench.
"[Isak] finished close to a week of team training sessions now, so he can play a part. Otherwise, I wouldn't take him.
I decided not to take him to the Etihad because we felt in talks with the player, medical, performance staff that he wasn't able to get a performance out of him yet.
"And since he's with us now, we do think that we can get a performance out of him now. But not to start – that [would] be clear."
LFC Globe Verdict
With everything going on around him, Slot was upbeat in his presser. Maybe the club can feed off of that and produce a positive result.
