Liverpool threatened in the opening seconds, but Alexander Isak put a shot wide. The Reds began to be sloppy with the ball with multiple turnovers, but they did earn a corner in the 10th minute. Bradley Barcola put a shot on goal in the 15th minute, but it was saved.
Liverpool were caught out on the counterattack as Marcos Llorente scored in the 17th minute. Alisson came up with a big save later in the half to keep the scoreline from getting worse. Liverpool had plenty of possession the rest of the half. That paid off in the equalizer as Ronald Araujo found Dominik Szoboszlai in front of the net for the easy finish and a 1-1 tie at half.
