36-Team League Phase Format & Tiebreakers Guide

One table, eight different opponents

The Champions League league phase brings 36 clubs into one table. Liverpool play eight matches against eight different opponents, with four home fixtures and four away fixtures. This is not the old four-team group system, and Liverpool do not play every club in the standings. Each result contributes to the same league-phase ranking. A win earns three points, a draw one and a defeat none. The fixtures tracker above shows Liverpool’s own route through that schedule, with each match linked to its Match Centre.

Read the table columns together: P is matches played, W wins, D draws, L losses, GF goals scored, GA goals conceded, GD goal difference and Pts points. A club that has played fewer matches may still move substantially as the schedule catches up. The rank beside its name is its official position in the latest confirmed snapshot. Sorting a statistical column helps comparison, but does not replace that official rank.

Use Liverpool Context & Opponents to focus on Liverpool and their eight league-phase opponents. The remaining filters separate the three provisional finishing zones. All 36 Clubs restores the full picture. The Liverpool highlight is independent of the zone border, and every border pattern also has a written label so the meaning does not depend on colour.

Qualification zones and equal points

After the league phase, places 1–8 advance directly to the Round of 16. Clubs in positions 9–24 enter the knockout play-offs, while positions 25–36 leave the competition. During the phase, those labels describe current positions rather than confirmed outcomes. A place in the top eight today is not a guarantee of direct qualification, and a club in the elimination zone can still climb while matches remain.

When clubs finish level on points, UEFA first compares goal difference, then goals scored, away goals scored, wins and away wins. If equality remains, the collective points, goal difference and goals scored by their league-phase opponents follow. Disciplinary points and the club coefficient are later criteria. The official ranking therefore cannot always be reconstructed from points and goal difference alone. This page retains the supplied official order instead of inventing an alphabetical tiebreak.

The checked time identifies the snapshot being displayed. An interrupted refresh leaves the last complete table visible, with delayed freshness made clear. The fixture list and table may be checked at different times, so consult an individual Match Centre for a match’s latest confirmed status. This league-phase table remains a league-phase record when the competition moves into knockout rounds; knockout ties do not become additional league fixtures.
