Bournemouth vs Liverpool Preview: Iraola Returns to the South Coast

After three straight matches at Anfield, Liverpool hit the road to face Bournemouth on September 20. There are a lot of interesting subplots in this match as Andoni Iraola returns to face his former club from the opposite tactical area. Liverpool want to break out of a string of mediocre results in Premier League play.

A Homecoming For Iraola 

Iraola spent three years with the Cherries, but he promises to be ruthless in his return to the coast.

“On the personal side, I’m really looking forward to meeting them, to hug them, it’s players that I love, staff that I have been working with, that I appreciate so much,” he said. “I was pushing for them yesterday when they were playing their first European game, and I wish them all the best. But there is another part, and that is the most important one right now: we need to go there and beat them and be as ruthless as possible. And leave all the talks for after the game.”

Injury Update & Other News

 The injury situation remains unchanged for the Reds as Conor Bradley, Federico Chiesa, Hugo Ekitike, and Giovanni Leoni are all unavailable for the match. Liverpool have drawn 3 out of 4 matches to start an EPL season for the first time since 2005. Liverpool lost their last trip to Bournemouth 3-2 in January of 2026, though the Reds have won 14 out of the last 18 matches against the Cherries. Iraola has a good chance to beat his former club as new Reds managers have beaten their former clubs each of the last five times in similar situations.

Headed For Another Draw?

While Liverpool have drawn three out of their first four matches, Bournemouth are on an even longer streak. They drew 13 of their 23 EPL matches so far since the calendar flipped to 2026. They have just three points in four games, but forward  Marcus Taviner has 3 goals in four EPL matches. The Cherries have had success in European football, though, as they are unbeaten in the Europa League and Carabao Cup competitions so far.

LFC Globe Verdict

Despite what looks like a favorable matchup for the Reds on paper, I think Liverpool could struggle in this one. They looked much better in the Carabao Cup victory vs. Spurs, but you, Bournemouth fans, will be looking to stick it to their former boss. Putting that aside, I just think the way Bournemouth sets up, and with Liverpool’s recent form in the League, we are headed for a 1-1 draw.
