Liverpool and Burnley may be at opposite ends of the table, but that does not mean that the Reds should not expect a tough test from the Clarets on Boxing Day.
Burnley Getting Better
Despite Burnley being in the relegation zone and Liverpool defeating them recently in the Carabao Cup, Jürgen Klopp knows that this will be a tough challenge. They are coming off a win vs Fulham. Burnley have had trouble scoring this season as Wilson Odobert leads the squad in scoring with just 4 goals.
“I think Burnley could have easily had much more points because they had so many good spells in the games where they then don't finish these situations off,” Klopp said. “Young players in some positions. In the moment they finish these situations off, they can win football games, definitely. It was very often that they were really good in the game and I respect Vinny [Kompany] a lot for [the fact that] he keeps pushing his idea through.”
Who Will Play Left Back?
Injuries to Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas have created the question. Since both are expected to be out for a long period with surgery and a broken collarbone, whoever Klopp chooses will have to play. Joe Gomez is the most likely since he replaced Tsimikas vs Arsenal, but the Reds could also look for someone in the transfer window, which closes on February 1st.
News & Notes
Liverpool have won the last six Boxing Day Matches, dating back to 2013. Should he be named to the Starting XI, it will be Cody Gakpo's 50th start for the club since making his debut in July of 2023. Liverpool also have 50 wins all-time over Burnley and have played the Clarets seven times in a Boxing Day fixture.
LFC Globe Verdict
Boxing Day should be a fun one for football fans in England and across the pond in the United States. There will be 12 straight hours of football broadcasts. Liverpool vs Burnley is not the most marquee of the matchups, but it is important. The Reds need all three points to keep pace with Arsenal after consecutive draws and they get the win by a 3-1 margin.
