Liverpool face a giant test when they travel to Turkey tomorrow for the first leg of the Champions League round of 16 versus Galatasaray. The Reds will have to deal with a boisterous environment, while Georgie Mamardashvili needs to command his box, and the back line will have to deal with Victor Osimhen.
A Harsh Environment
The Reds are no stranger to having a target on their backs when they play away from Anfield. But Galatasaray will pose even more of a challenge. The Rams have not lost on their home pitch since a November 2025 UCL and are a perfect 10-0-3 in Turkish Super League play on their home pitch. Arne Slot is impressed with the energy of Galatassaray's supporters.
“These fans over here are very impressive,” Slot said. “We've noticed that when we've played here. The good thing is we've experienced it already once now. That's maybe a positive thing. The Galatasaray players are experiencing this every home game. But for us, it was new when you have the ball that the whistling, if that's the right word, is so loud. That was new for me and even for all of my experienced players. So, the good thing is that we've already experienced it. But we not only play against the fans, we also play against 11 very good players that are a very strong team, managed by a very good manager.”
Mamardashvili Big Moment
The backup keeper has had limited opportunities to impress this season. However, he gets the chance now thanks to a minor Alisson injury. Mamardashvili has made eleven starts for the Reds this season and only has two clean sheets in the process. he will have to be on point as Galatasaray is a cross-heavy team that likes to send the ball in the box from different angles.
That means Mamardashvili will have to be aggressive and come off of his line to claim those crosses before Osimhen and others can get on the end of it. Some of that responsibility also falls on the midfield players like Alexis MacAllister or Ryan Gravenberch, as they can step up and win the ball before Galatasaray can launch those crosses.
Dealing With Osimhen
Victor Oshimen is dangerous in any competition, but particularly so in the Champions League. He has 16 goals overall, but seven of them have come in eight UCL games. That puts a huge stain on the backline, which is why Andy Robertson should start at left back instead of the faster, but less experienced Milos Kerkez. The defence also has to be disciplined, as Galatasaray’s only goal in the last meeting was a penalty kick in the 16th minute.
