Liverpool had the first chance of the game, and they cashed it in. After earning a corner, Dominik Szoboszlai delivered a cross in the box. Milos Kerkez flicked the ball to Luke Chambers, who made no mistake in giving the Reds a 1-0 lead after seven minutes.

Trey Nyoni forced a save in the 16th minute, and both goalies were a bit shaky with passes out of the back, but Liverpool still held a 1-0 lead.

Leeds put a solid chance just wide in the 25th minute while Rio Ngumoha continued to cause Leeds problems in the attacking third. He earned a dangerous free kick in the 33rd minute, but it was cleared. However, Liverpool added to its lead just before the half as Florian Wirtz scored from in front of goal thanks to an assist from Jeremie Frimpong, for a 2-0 lead at the break.
