Liverpool wrap up their USA Tour in Chicago vs. Leeds United on August 2nd. The Reds are hoping to wrap up a perfect trip across the pond after victories over Sunderland and Wrexham. Ryan Gravenberch, Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz were on site for the win vs Wrexham, but were not dressed out. They should feature in this contest.
Iraola Speaks To The Media
The new boss, Andoni Iraola, spoke to the media about the pre-season tour so far and the impact he hopes young players will have on the club during the regular season.
“I think it (the tour) has been really, really useful,” he said. “Obviously, you spend a lot of time with the players, with the staff; you get all the information you can. And I think there is also an evolution; it has to be. We start to understand each other better, what we need to do. Every game, I hope we can get closer and closer and put ourselves in a position where the few players that still are not here start to train also; they are helped by the others.”
He then discussed the role of younger players in the squad.
“Some of them (young players) are going to return to the U21s, some of them will go on loan, and some of them will stay with us because I think we will need them during the season. They’ve shown me that they have the level; they can give us quality minutes, a good level in training, and I’m sure some of them will stay with us, yes.“
A Look At Leeds
Liverpool and Leeds drew both fixtures last season, 3-3 and then 0-0. Those might have been the biggest results for the Peacocks as they finished 14th on the table. Dominic Calvert-Lewin was by far the best player on the squad with 14 goals. So far this pre-season, they have beaten Sunderland but lost to Wrexham.
The Squad Takes Shape
Goalie Alisson Becker, midfielder Alexis Mac Allister and newcomer Victor Munoz will join the club once they return to Merseyside. The club could also add other players as they are in advanced negotiations with PSG’s Bradley Barcola and others.
LFC Globe Verdict
I think it is important that Liverpool play well and win this match. You don’t want them to go back to Liverpool on a sour note. I like how the team is currently constructed, though some pundits have said that the Reds need to make four or more splash signings to compete for an EPL title. That’s unrealistic. I think if the Reds can sign Barcola, we will be in good shape.
