Now that it is official that Arne Slot has been sacked, who will be the next boss at Liverpool Football Club? That’s the question on everybody’s lips these days. For the longest time, it was rumoured that former Reds player Xabi Alonso would take over, but now that he has agreed to take the Chelsea job, where do Liverpool turn next?
Here is a breakdown of the Top 3 candidates and the pros to each choice.
Choice #1 - Andoni Iraola
The Spaniard is the clear favourite. He is familiar with the EPL, having just done an impressive job at Bournemouth. He guided the Cherries to a sixth-place finish in the EPL and qualification for the Europa League for the first time in club history. He is well respected in the coaching fraternity, drawing praise from former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. In a 2024 press conference, Klopp said of Iraola:
“They turned it around, wow. That’s real coaching. He found a way to set this team up. They have a really good mix, they play football, they find direction in the right moments, they use Dom Solanke in a sensational way. “The support he gets from the centre, from the wings. The way they defend, really good, really compact.”
Choice #2 - Sebastian Hoeneß
This is an up-and-coming manager in the football world. He took a struggling Stuttgart team that was fighting to stave off relegation in 2023 to a 4th place finish at the end of this season. Hoeneß’s teams are known to dominate possession while staying aggressive in the attack. While not exactly Klopp’s brand of heavy metal football, it is more in line with what supporters have come to expect over the years.
Choice #3 - Pierre Sarge
The Frenchman turned in one of the most impressive seasons in World Football. He kept Lens at the top of Ligue 1 until March, above the likes of eventual Champions League winners PSG. Lens ended up finishing in 2nd, just six points behind PSG. Sarge does not focus on possession as much and would rather throw numbers forward on the counterattack. He prefers a 3-3 tactical formation, which would be a change, but after a disappointing season, maybe a tactical change is needed.
LFC Globe Verdict
Personally, I would like to see Iraola as the next boss. He has proven he can win in the EPL on a small budget at Bournemouth. Imagine what he can do with the Redss’ cahflow. I don’t make those decisions, so it will be interesting to see what direction the top brass chooses.
