Liverpool have already addressed their need for a winger with the signing of Victor Munoz. Now the Reds have bolstered the backline with the addition of Jeremy Jacquet. The 20-year-old defender signed a five-year £60m contract that will keep him at Anfield through at least the 2031 campaign.

“I feel really good, the first impressions are good, and I am very happy to start here,” Jacquet said to the club’s official website. “I am very happy. When I see the facilities, I can see myself there. I feel good here, and I am very excited to get started. For me, it’s a big dream; it’s a big club. A club like Liverpool, it’s a big dream for me.”

Jacquet comes to Anfield from top-tier French side Rennes, where he made 33 appearances. While he did not have any goals during that stretch, Jacquet did score twice on loan with  Clermont in 17 appearances. He plays internationally for the French U-21 team.

Play Style

Jacquet is the natural replacement for the recently departed Ibrahima Konate. There is even some speculation that Jacquet will wear Konate’s #5 shirt, though that has yet to be confirmed. Even so, the two Frenchmen have vastly different playing styles. Konate preferred to defend with his head in the air. At 6’2, Jacquet is slightly shorter than Konate. Although strong with his head on the backline, Jacquet is more comfortable using his feet to cut out passes, ranking as one of the top players in Europe in interception rates. Sources vary on the exact percentage. This talent gives new boss Andoni Iraola a versatile but raw talent in the back. He will benefit from pairing with the experience and leadership of captain Virgil van Dijk and can hopefully progress quickly.

LFC Globe Verdict

I like this signing. Jacquet is not an Ibrahima Konate clone, and he doesn’t need to be. Andoni Iraola seems to be opting for younger players who can move the ball forward quickly. Jacquet is known for his footwork and spatial awareness, so he can cut out passes and start the attack moving forward. I can’t wait to see what he can do on the pitch and how Jacquet develops in the years to come.
