LFC Globe 018 - Premier League Preview - Tottenham Hotspur vs Liverpool - Liverpool Need a Win Against Spurs in London to Get Season on Track

Liverpool are set to resume their Premier League campaign late Sunday afternoon against Tottenham Hotspur. Kick-off is at 15:30 BST from Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and should be a fantastic game to cap what will surely be a great Premier League weekend. 

The Reds’ last game saw a great overall performance in the final group-stage match of the Champions League. They managed to put a total team effort in against Napoli on Tuesday night’s 2-0 win. Tottenham are also coming into the weekend on the heels of a dramatic, last-second win in the Champions League on Wednesday night. 

Liverpool only have one more game after Sunday before the World Cup break. Any points in North London would be welcomed but a big road win in a tough stadium to play could be just the thing to turn the Reds’ Premier League season around. 

Talking Points for Lucky Game 13

Going into the weekend, Liverpool find themselves 10 points behind Tottenham in the Premier League table. A big win against a top 3 team could be just the thing to get Liverpool’s Premier League season back on track. 

Liverpool are trying to salvage their EPL season after two consecutive losses to teams in the bottom half of the table. Last weekend’s last-minute disaster against Leeds United at Anfield and the disappointing match a week before at Nottingham Forest have the Reds reeling. 

They have had significantly more success in the Champions League in the 2022/23 season, including their win Tuesday night against Napoli. We’ve preached time and again that Liverpool need to take their form in the Champions League and try to apply it better in the Prem. Will Sunday finally be the day that happens? 

Liverpool should have a decent complement of players available according to Jürgen Klopp’s press conference on Friday. Jordan Henderson will be available after missing the Champions League game midweek. Outside of the long-term injuries, the Reds will only be missing James Milner this weekend due to a concussion suffered in the Napoli match. 

The final talking point for the weekend is that the World Cup break is rapidly approaching. The way things have been going for Liverpool this season, the 6-week pause in the Premier League might be just what they need. 

Sunday’s match is one of 2 opportunities the Reds have before the World Cup break, which goes until Boxing Day (December 26th, 2022) to get this EPL season turned around. Liverpool’s final match before the World Cup is next Saturday’s game against Southampton at Anfield. 

Tottenham are Wounded, Yet Dangerous

Tottenham currently sit 3rd in the Premier League and like the Reds, they have also managed to get through to the Champions League knock-out rounds. Also like Liverpool, Spurs are heading towards the World Cup break missing some all-world talent.

Just this week it was announced that South Korean icon Heung-Min Son will miss this week’s match with a fractured orbital bone. The injury will also keep the beloved forward out of the World Cup. Spurs are also without standout midfielder Dejan Kulusevski, reserve striker Richarlison, and central defender, Cristian Romero. 

Liverpool fans know this kind of pain all too well this season. Diogo Jota and Luis Díaz were both set to join their national teams for the November World Cup, and as we know due to injuries they won’t be able to go to the tournament. Tottenham’s injury woes will get no sympathy from Liverpool supporters. 

Tottenham are still a dangerous team, led by England’s striker for the upcoming World Cup, Harry Kane. They are also a very well-managed side, with Antonio Conte. The highly-regarded Italian manager will surely be able to put a good lineup on the pitch regardless of the players available

Tottenham are a top 3 team right now and in that elite group of Premier League clubs to have never been relegated. Like the Reds, they see themselves as title contenders this year. Unlike Liverpool, Tottenham have consistently shown their intent on the field.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is a tough place to play. It’s loud, it’s flashy, and it would be a perfect environment for Liverpool to reestablish their Premier League credentials. Spurs are ripe for an upset this weekend with all the injury drama.

I think Liverpool get their championship EPL form back a bit this weekend. I think they’ll play much better than they did in the last 2 matches in the Prem. However, I don’t think it’ll be enough for 3 points. I see a pragmatic, defensive 1-1 draw.
