The first segment of the Group Games of the World Cup has concluded, and several Liverpool players are performing well across the pond on the world stage. Here is a look at how each player is faring and what’s up next for their respective teams
The Dutch Go Deep In The Heart Of Texas
The Netherlands and Japan squared off on June 14th in Dallas, Texas. They treated fans to one of the matches of the tournament so far, battling to a 2-2 draw. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring with a vintage header in the 50th minute, thanks to an assist from Ryan Gravenberch. Cody Gakpo was also named to the Dutch Starting XI, but missed a big chance and was subbed off late.
Unfortunately, Wataru Endo, who was expected to play a vital role for Japan’s backline, suffered an injury just days before the World Cup began and has officially announced his retirement from international competition.
Up next, the Netherlands will face Alexander Isak and Sweden on Saturday, June 20th, at 1 PM EST in Houston, Texas.
South American Star Power
In Group C, Alisson Becker made two saves as Brazil settled for a 1-1 draw vs. Morocco on June 13th in New Jersey. In Kansas City, Alexis Mac Allister put a shot on frame that Messi sent home for the second goal of his hat trick vs. Algeria on June 16th. MacAllister was also an ironman in the match, playing a full 90 minutes in the match.
Brazil returns to action on June 19th vs Haiti in Philadelphia. Kickoff is set for 8:30 PM EST. Argentina will face Austria in Dallas on June 22 at 1 PM EST
Isak Impresses, Wirtz Cruises, and Konate Sits Out
Alexander Isak probably had the best game of all the Liverpool players in the opening round of the Group Stage. He finished with a goal and two assists in a 5-1 win vs. Tunisia 5-1. Florian Wirtz picked up an assist in Germany’s 7-1 drubbing of Curacao on June 14th in Houston. Ibrahima Konate did not feature in France’s 3-1 win over Senegal
Up next, Sweden will face the Netherlands on June 20th at 1 PM EST, Germany will take on the Ivory Coast the same day at 4 PM, and France will face Iraq on June 22nd at 5 PM EST.
LFC Globe Verdict
All around, Liverpool players had strong opening games of the 2026 World Cup. Hopefully, that trend will continue throughout the Summer.
