came into the side to replace the injured at centre-back, whilst new signings Thiago and were named on the bench.

The champions made a commanding start to the game as they kept the ball away from the hosts and looked to open gaps between the lines.

Their best chance of the opening stages came Sadio Mane, after capitalised on Kepa Arrizabalaga's hesitance by beating him to the ball and finding Mane in the box. But the Senegal 's effort was blocked by a defender from close-range.

Chelsea came into the game in flashes, with particularly one transition seeing Timo Werner go one-v-one against Fabinho, who did superbly to read the striker and make a crucial tackle on the edge of the box.

Liverpool dictated the rhythm of the game but chances were far and few between for either side. Frank Lampard's side were content to drop off and allow the Reds to have the ball in midfield, clearly wary of their threat in behind.

Referee Paul Tierney handed the defender just a yellow card, but changed it to a straight red after reviewing the tackle on the VAR monitor, bringing Chelsea down to 10 men.

Jordan Henderson, who pulled up with a thigh injury at half-time, made way for new Thiago as he slotted in as Liverpool's defensive midfielder for the second half.

It took the champions just five minutes to take the lead against Chelsea's ten men as Mane redirected 's cross into the back of the net to make it 1-0 to Liverpool.

It took Mane less than four minutes to double the Reds' advantage as he pressed Arrizabalaga and intercepted the Spaniard's pass to roll the ball .

Liverpool appeared to cruise from then on, safe in the knowledge they had a man advantage in the middle of the park. Naby Keita made way for after the hour mark as Klopp looked to consolidate his side's stability.

Wijnaldum stung the gloves of Arrizabalaga from a tight angle after another good ball through by Firmino, with the Reds in total control of the game.

The Blues were given a lifeline as new boy Thiago brought Werner down in the box, but Alisson stepped up to deny Jorginho from 12 yards, keeping the Reds' two-goal margin.

Liverpool had a few more chances through Salah, Wijnaldum and Mane, but it finished 2-0 in the end on a successful afternoon for the champions.
