With a third-place finish in the newly-formed Nations League at stake, England started the game well and created their fair share of openings with and both coming close to scoring the break-through.

Switzerland were equally impressive in spells as Shaqiri and striker Haris Seferovic strung some clever interchanges in well-worked moves, however, the English back-line stood strong to keep them at bay and both sides entered the break level.

Alexander-Arnold and Gomez were both crucial in shutting the Swiss attack down their flank, with the duo showing a marked improvement on Kyle Walker and John Stones' exploits against the Dutch in midweek.

There was bad news for Shaqiri just after the hour mark as he pulled up with a suspected ankle or calf injury, hobbling off the pitch to be replaced by Steven Zuver.

Shaqiri will likely have to report back to Melwood on Monday as the club's medical department investigate the extent of his injury ahead of pre-season training starting in less than a month's time.

Neither side looked clinical enough to take the lead as the second-half wore on, however with the threat of extra-time and penalties looming, England pressed on for a winner as Callum Wilson came on for a lethargic Kane.

Wilson thought he scored the winner just six minutes from time after Dele Alli's header hit the woodwork and fell to the striker, however, VAR disallowed the goal for a foul by Wilson in the build-up as the scores remained level.

Jordan Pickford was the hero for England after a goalless extra-time period, with the shot-stopper saving Josip Drmic's penalty to the shootout 6-5 for England.

Netherlands take on hosts Portugal in the final later this evening as and look to add a second trophy to their stunning season.
