Watford had the greater share of opportunities in the opening stages as Liverpool struggled to get going, with Alisson called into action to deny Juraj Kucka after the visitors had made a quick break in behind the Reds' defence.
But Liverpool took the lead midway through the first half via a Diogo Jota header, with the Portuguese forward glancing past Ben Foster after meeting Joe Gomez's pinpoint cross from the right to make it 1-0.
The Reds controlled the ball for much of the remaining first half and deep into the second half, but clear-cut chances remained limited as the Hornets did well to stand their ground in hope of a quick break falling their way.
Liverpool were awarded a late penalty after Jota was brought down by Juraj Kucka from a Reds corner, with substitute Fabinho stepping up from the spot to make it 2-0 and round off a successful outing for Jurgen Klopp's side.
The result sees Liverpool go top of the Premier League table on 72 points - two above Manchester City, who take on Burnley at Turf Moor later on Saturday - before the two sides meet at the Etihad next weekend in a crunch clash.
