Both sides exchanged goals inside the opening six minutes as Douglas Luiz followed up a rebound following his own header to give the hosts the lead before the Reds capitalised on poor defending from a set-piece as Joel Matip tucked home following good work from fellow centre-back Virgil van Dijk to make it 1-1.
Sadio Mane had a goal disallowed after Luis Diaz was rightly judged to be offside in the build-up before setting up his fellow forward, with both sides eventually going into the break on level terms.
The Reds went ahead for the first time on the night through Mane, who rounded off an excellent move initiated by Jota. Diaz was released down the left before he cut inside and picked out Mane, who steered a fantastic header past Emiliano Martinez to put Liverpool 2-1 up with 25 minutes left on the clock.
Former Reds striker Danny Ings thought he had levelled the scores after creeping in behind the Liverpool defence and finding the far corner with an excellent finish from a tight angle, but the linesman rightly flagged for offside.
Despite a nervy finish for Jurgen Klopp's side, it ultimately finished 2-1 in the Reds' favour, with all eyes now on Manchester City's trip to Wolves on Wednesday night, before attention turns to this weekend's FA Cup final.
