Previously, we considered Who has been Jürgen Klopp's best signing? and today we will look at the other side.
Thanks to the likes of Michael Edwards and Julian Ward who headed up the transfer committee at Liverpool, poor signings under the Jürgen Klopp regime have been a rarity.
Liverpool have been one of the best-run teams in the world for several years with transfers both in and out of the club working perfectly to put the best product onto the pitch for the fans.
However, even the best teams have a few duds and Liverpool have had a couple.
The signings of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keïta in 2017 and 2018 were both seen as positive ones but in 2023, to most fans, it has not worked out for either of them as they are set to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of this season.
Both players, in my opinion, are a challenge for the title of Jürgen Klopp's worst signing during his reign at Liverpool.
Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
The former Arsenal man was signed for a hefty fee of £ 35 million in 2018 and made an impact upon his arrival.
Playing in his favoured central midfield position, a role he was unable to consistently play at Arsenal, Chamberlain flourished in both the Premier League and Champions League, notably scoring a screamer against Manchester City in the European competition on the way to knocking them out and making the final in 2018.
However, a major knee injury in April 2018 ruled him out for the rest of the season as well as the majority of the next season.
After a resurgence in the 2019/20 season where he netted further goals in the Champions League, the Ox suffered injury issues once again which unfortunately began a theme for the rest of his Liverpool career.
The Englishman has made just 30 appearances in the league in his last three seasons at the club and despite winning multiple trophies, the fee he cost and the lack of availability and production in his last three seasons at Liverpool make him a failure.
Naby Keïta
The Guinean midfielder was one of the most highly-sought players in Europe after his exploits with RB Leipzig.
After agreeing to a £ 52 million move to Liverpool in 2017, Keïta spent one more year at the Bundesliga move before eventually making the move to Merseyside.
Keïta had a successful first season at the club, making 25 league appearances and winning the Champions League at the club.
The 28-year-old's technical ability was never in question as he was normally the best midfielder the club possessed during his time at the club but similarly to Chamberlain, availability was Keïta's biggest issue.
Following his debut season, he made just 28 league appearances in his next two seasons, scoring just two goals.
His price demanded more games and more production but most times when Keïta was on a good run of form, an injury would strike him down.
In what is most likely his final season at the club, he's been a bit-part player, making just 13 appearances and will most likely go down as Klopp's most disappointing signing.
While I believe most will agree, there are some other disappointing signings Klopp has made, who will you choose?
