Liverpool started brightly but faded as the first half wore on, with Brighton looking dangerous through the likes of Aaron Connolly and Neal Maupay.
The home side failed to convert a penalty after Neco Williams brought Connolly down in the box midway through the first half before Mohamed Salah had a goal ruled out for offside.
Liverpool fared better in the second half and they got their reward just before the hour mark as Diogo Jota received the ball just inside the box and eluded Brighton's defenders before coolly slotting the ball into the bottom corner.
With the Reds looking set to earn a hard-fought three points, Brighton received a lifeline through a combination of VAR and referee Stuart Attwell in injury-time.
Andy Robertson made slight contact with Danny Welbeck whilst making a clearance inside the box, with the referee eventually giving the home side the call. Pascal Gross stepped up to convert the penalty, sending Alisson the wrong way.
It was a harsh ending for the Reds, who deserved more from the game, despite evidently not being at their absolute best.
