The Reds gave up a two-nil lead against Sam Ricketts' side less than a fortnight ago as Curtis Jones' opener and an own goal by Donald Love was cancelled out by Shrewsbury substitute Jason Cummings.

Jurgen Klopp named a mixed side that night, with both fringe players and youngsters featuring for the Reds. However, with the first-team away on their winter break, an exceptionally young side is expected at Anfield.

U23s boss Neil Critchley will lead Liverpool out for the second time this season, with several of the youngsters who featured in the 5-0 loss at Aston Villa in the League Cup in December given an opportunity to put things right.

Much has been made of Klopp's decision to sit out the fixture alongside the rest of his squad, however, it remains an excellent opportunity for Critchley and co to prove their ability on the big stage once again.

Shrewsbury will undoubtedly be optimistic of achieving a famous win, but who knows, the young Reds may be able to do what the first eleven couldn't in the reverse tie. After all, it's still Liverpool playing at fortress Anfield.
