Liverpool return to domestic action after progressing to the last 16 of the Champions League with their midweek triumph against Napoli.

The visitors to Anfield this time around are Manchester United, arch rivals that Liverpool have failed to beat in the Premier League in the last four-and-a-half years.

Whilst Man United have recent history on their side in this fixture, in truth the home side are far superior of late. Mourinho's team have looked in disarray - their latest disappointment coming in Wednesday's 2-1 defeat to Valencia.

United have had an underwhelming first half of the Premier League campaign, sitting in sixth place and an astonishing 16 points behind Jurgen Klopp's side at the start of play.

Liverpool never need added incentive to beat United, however with Manchester City beating Everton in Saturday's early kick-off, victory on Sunday will see them regain top spot in the league table.

It promises to be an action-packed afternoon on Merseyside and with the last two fixtures at Anfield finishing goalless, it surely must be third time lucky for the Reds...

Liverpool have had to contend with somewhat of a build up of injuries recently, with Tuesday's victory over Napoli coming at a cost to the boss.

Joel Matip (broken collarbone) and Trent Alexander-Arnold (foot) were both forced off the pitch late on and have been ruled out of today's game, with Matip out for a further six weeks.

With Joe Gomez suffering a fractured leg against Burnley almost a fortnight ago, Liverpool's defensive options are down to their bare bones.

Dejan Lovren should join Virgil van Dijk at the heart of defence, however it remains to be seen who Klopp opts to draft in at right-back, with the impressive Andy Robertson continuing on the opposite flank.

James Milner, who played there against Bournemouth, is a likely starter in that role, although Klopp may also turn to the unlikelier option of Nathaniel Clyne, who has been involved in training this week.

Supporters will hope that Naby Keita and Fabinho are given a chance to shine in one of the bigger games of the season, although it is highly likely that Gini Wijnaldum and Jordan Henderson start - leaving a place for just one in the starting eleven.

Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane are all due to start in attacking roles, with Xherdan Shaqiri, Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi likely to be on the substitutes bench as additional support.
