Slot: Liverpool Lacked "Special Moments" to Break Leeds Low Block

Liverpool did not give supporters much to cheer about, only putting four shots on goal in a 0-0 draw vs Leeds. Alisson did record his 100th clean sheet for the club with the result, but it was a missed opportunity to move up the table.

Frustrating For Everyone

Sometimes a draw feels like a loss. Judging by the reaction of players, this is one of those times.

"It's really frustrating, Jeremie Frimpong told Sky Sports.“We wanted to win the game. I don't think we created that [many] chances. They defended well. At the end of the day, 0-0, it's very frustrating, but on to the next game."

Slot Praises Leeds Defense

“It’s tough to score when a team is so good in defending and then in such a low block,” he said.”It’s hard to find space when there are 11 men behind the ball. We want to push forward quickly, but there was just no space. The key to unlocking it is set pieces. We had eight today and could not convert. We were close with Virgil. The other way is a moment of individual brilliance like Jeremie (Frimpong) had last week vs. Wolves. We had some of that where we took on defenders, but could not finish.  I think we are the team with the most ball possession this year in the league, but ball possession means not a lot if you cannot create enough chances. To create chances against a low block, you need pace, individual special moments to create an overload. You don't see a lot of 15-to-20-passes goals against low blocks.”

LFC Globe Verdict

Could the reason behind Liverpool’s sluggishness in attack be the two changes in midfield Slot made to the Starting XI? The 4-2-3-1 had been working so well up until today. Some changes were needed due to the game with Fulham coming up on January 4th, but they needed to be in attack and not the most consistent area of the pitch this season. Andy Robertson and Conor Bradley are great players, but to break down a low block you need attacking-minded players like Milos Kerkez, Cody Gakpo or the youthful legs of Rio Ngumoha to play extended minutes.
