Liverpool 0-0 Manchester City: Highlights and Match Report

Liverpool and Manchester City played out a goalless draw in the Premier League at Anfield on Sunday.

The much anticipated fixture promised to be full of goals ahead of the game, however it turned out to be a cagey affair, with little to choose from between the sides.

With a place at the top of the Premier League before the international break at stake, the pressure was on Liverpool to make a statement win, however in truth they were fortunate to draw.

In a game that saw little goalmouth action, City edged the midfield battle and could have been rewarded all three points via a late 86th minute penalty.

Virgil van Dijk brought down substitute Leroy Sane in the box as the German looked to shoot from an acute angle, however Riyad Mahrez stepped up and blasted the resulting spot-kick over the crossbar as both teams shared a point apiece.

Klopp made two changes two his side from midweek, with centre-back Dejan Lovren and captain Jordan Henderson replacing Trent Alexander-Arnold and Naby Keita in the starting eleven.

And Lovren was fortunate to avoid gifting City a penalty in the early minutes, having swung wildly at Sergio Aguero in the area. However, referee Martin Atkinson waved away frantic appeals from the visitors.

James Milner then went down injured with a suspected hamstring injury just before the half-hour mark, resulting in Keita taking his place on the field.

City took control of the game as the half wore on, however both sides failed to create any clear cut chances with the game largely being played in the centre of the pitch.

Klopp made a slight change to his tactics at the break, with Joe Gomez and Andy Robertson being given the space to charge forward in search of an opening goal.

Mahrez then went close after getting past Robertson but was denied by a save from Alisson as Liverpool continued to struggle to get in their attacking groove.

Klopp's side finally had their first shot on target in two games when Mohamed Salah stuck one towards goal, although it was easily saved by City goalkeeper Ederson.

With five minutes to go, Leroy Sane charged forward into the danger area when the otherwise flawless Van Dijk made a clumsy challenge to give City a penalty that Mahrez eventually hit over the crossbar.

Liverpool then pushed for a winner via substitute Daniel Sturridge, however the two sides ultimately settled for a point each.

City lead the Premier League table going into the international break, with Chelsea in second and Liverpool in third - all separated by goal difference.
