Joe Gomez to make long-awaited return to Liverpool squad for Saints trip

is included in Liverpool's squad as they travel down to the south coast to face on Friday night.

The youngster has been out of action since early December, having undergone ankle surgery during his four-month spell out.

Gomez has been back in full training for over a week and, despite some provisional squads leaving him out ahead of tonight's fixture, according to The Telegraph, he is deemed fit enough to travel.

Whether he makes the final eighteen remains to be seen, with manager Jurgen Klopp having an otherwise nearly fully-fit squad to choose from.

and are the only long-term absentees, whilst brushed off an ankle knock against Tottenham on Sunday to make himself available.

Joel Matip has impressively stepped up alongside the Dutchman in recent months, whilst is also back fit and available after recovering from various injury issues.

It's highly doubtful that Gomez makes an immediate return to the starting eleven however he will be vying for a place on the substitutes bench ahead of Lovren.

Speaking ahead of the fixture, Klopp spoke about his defensive unit, praising them to be a 'proper' defence.

"They have a long career ahead, which is cool. And how it looks at the moment is that they want to spend the majority of their careers here, which is cool as well.

"It is probably not the most expensive defence in the world but it is a proper one, a really proper one.

"Wherever good players are coming from, wherever they are raised, wherever the dream started, they are welcome here at Liverpool."
