Liverpool defender to be rewarded with new and improved Reds contract

LFC Globe -

Liverpool have begun discussions with the representatives of over a new improved contract, according to latest reports.

Gomez, who signed a new contract in January last year, has another four years remaining on his current Liverpool deal.

However, his recent performances and standing in the squad is set to be rewarded with a bumper new deal, according to The Times' Paul Joyce and The Guardian's Andy Hunter.

Gomez has established himself as a senior player in Jurgen Klopp's squad at the start of this season, whilst the club have been open to offer improved terms to players who are outperforming their current deals.

Liverpool have conceded just three goals in their opening nine league games, the lowest in their entire club history, with Gomez playing a crucial role alongside at the heart of defence.

Whilst reports suggest that discussions between both parties have only just begun, there is no reason for terms to not be agreed swiftly.

Back in January last year, Gomez said of his new deal: “It's massive. It means a lot to me – it's a massive gesture from the club to show that trust and faith in me.

“That's why it was so important I did the same and done it so quickly, because I'm very happy here.

“I've loved living here and playing here and learning under the new manager, so it was a quick decision.”

The 21-year-old has made 53 appearances for Liverpool since his arrival three years ago, despite suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury that kept him out for over 15 months.

He has since worked hard to establish himself in squad, gaining experience as a right-back last season, before making the switch to centre-back in the absence of this season.

It remains to be seen how Klopp chooses to utilise Gomez, Lovren and right-back this season. However, Gomez is sure to have made a solid case for a regular starting role.
