Should Liverpool sell Mohamed Salah?

Asking whether Liverpool should sell one of their greatest-ever players seems like a loaded question, but one that must be asked.

Following the sale of his former teammate Sadio Mané last year, Liverpool have made an active approach to bolstering the front line with younger signings.

Darwin Núñez, Diogo Jota, Luis Díaz, and Cody Gakpo are all 26 years old and below.

At 30 years old, Salah ranks as one of the oldest players in the squad, however, his performances remain at a high level.

The dialogue around this topic is an interesting one with valid reasons both for and against the sale of the Egyptian King.

Liverpool should cash in on Salah

In recent years, Liverpool have failed to cash in on a number of players that would have commanded sizeable transfer fees.

A failure to lock Sadio Mané down to a new contract in his last few years at the club meant Bayern Munich had to pay a measly £30 million to secure the winger.

The likes of Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum were also allowed to leave on a free transfer when the club could have asked for considerable fees if they handled their contract disputes better.

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick always said that it’s always better to get rid of a player one year early rather than one year late.

Liverpool could be in this position with Salah.

The club would be able to command a transfer fee of well over £100 million for his services and bring in a replacement, much younger and less expensive than the winger.

Salah should retire at Liverpool

On the other hand, there are those who believe even the thought of getting rid of Salah is ludicrous.

A player who has netted 20 goals in all competitions for six years straight should surely be omitted from any conversation about getting sold.

Mohamed Salah is no doubt a Liverpool legend and while his Premier League output has decreased this season, he remains the talisman of this Liverpool side and the go-to man when the team needs to produce something special.

After signing his long-awaited new contract last summer that had Liverpool fans around the world sweating, the club finally tied down one of the world’s best players for the remainder of his prime.

While it is rare in today’s game, some players have earned the right to call time on their own career and there is a population of Reds out there that believe Mo Salah is certainly among that crop.
