London Calling: Liverpool To Face Chelsea in Cup Final

Liverpool havehas a chance to lift four trophies this season, the first of which comes on Sunday, February 25 at historic Wembley Stadium when they face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup Final. The Reds will be short-handed as a total of 9 players are on the injury list with most not expected to return until after the International Break (March 26th)

A “Peppy” Presser

Liverpool assistant manager Pep Lijnders met with the media ahead of the Final and you could tell he was excited.

“Liverpool Football Club is made for major trophies and each year we should fight for them – that should always be the target and that's what we are going to try to do,” he said. “We're always close with them (Chelsea), always. We were always close with them – 11 penalties! But special games need special performances, so we have to focus on the performance. Special performances mean that we lift the stadium – we need the fans. We go for it.”

News & Notes

Having done so on four previous occasions, Liverpool and Chelsea are no strangers to facing one another in Finals. Sunday will mark the first time the same clubs have battled for a Domestic Title on five separate occasions in English Football history. Liverpool will be making their 44th appearance at Wembley (22 wins). They are also looking to win the competition for the 10th time which would be two more than Manchester City. Of the previous nine wins, only two have been decided in normal time. The Reds are unbeaten vs.Chelsea in their last 8 meetings.

A Deeper Look At Chelsea

The Blues have been inconsistent this season. They lost to Liverpool by a 4-1 final earlier in the campaign. The Blues stabilized themselves a bit, however. Even though they sit 10th on the table, they are unbeaten in their last three matches including a draw vs. Manchester City. Chelsea is led in scoring by Cole Palmer who has 12 goals.

LFC Globe Verdict

Even though the Reds have played at Wembley 44 times, you could tell by listening to players and coaches that this match is special. This is the perfect opportunity to begin writing a happy ending to Jürgen Klopp’s final chapters at Anfield. Chelsea would be more than happy to spoil the party, but I think Liverpool will take this one in penalties.
