Liverpool FC Opinion

Why should Liverpool buy Mason Mount?

As far as I’m concerned, Liverpool’s midfield is in a state of emergency.

With the likes of Naby Keïta, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Arthur Melo expected to leave in the summer, Liverpool are in desperate need of not only additions in the middle of the park but quality ones at that.

Liverpool have been linked with a plethora of midfielders over the past year or so but most fans remain in the dark about which players are actually going to end up at Anfield.

One player who’s been rumoured with a move to Merseyside is Chelsea’s, Mason Mount.

Energy

While some of Mount’s midfield attributes may be simple to some people, traits like energy, work rate and pressing ability are things that the Liverpool midfield desperately require.

A club of Liverpool’s stature should not be going into a UEFA Champions League knockout game away to Real Madrid with a two-man midfield consisting of Fabinho and James Milner.

The lack of pace, athleticism and agility in the pair could be exploited by any half-decent side, and that’s what we saw during Wednesday’s clash.

Mount’s never-ending energy would certainly provide a boost of excitement the midfield hasn’t had since Gini Wijnaldum’s departure.

A typical box-to-box player with attacking tendencies, I trust Klopp to mould Mount into a Liverpool-type player that can succeed in either the left or right central midfield spot.

While he’s suffered a dip in form this season, Mount has proved himself to be a reliable goal-scorer from midfield, netting 11 league goals last season for the West London club.

Versatility

As I’ve mentioned in previous articles, Klopp places a lot of emphasis on the versatility of players.

He likes his players to be able to play in different positions, having an impact on several parts of the pitch.

Mason Mount certainly has that in spades.

The 24-year-old is able to play as a central or attacking midfielder and has sometimes come off the left wing.

While his speciality position is in the middle of the park, Mount has the technical capabilities to play multiple positions and under the tutelage of Klopp, he’s bound to grow in spades.

While his contract issues continue to be under the microscope, the noises of Mount Liverpool will only grow stronger.
