Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp met with membeÏrs of the media Wednesday morning to discuss the upcoming match with Newcastle United. The boss addressed the team's 9-0 route of Bournemouth, injuries, the transfer window and several other topics.
“The scoreline is a freak. It does not happen often,” Klopp said. “We don't expect that freakish scoreline again because of the quality of football in the league. What I want to keep (from the last match) is the way we played. We have played that way before. It's just that 9 shots did not go in. This time they did. I would have been over the moon with a 1-0 win and would think that 9-0 feels 9 times better, but it doesn't Honestly, it feels pretty rough.”
On the injury front, Curtis Jones and Joel Matip were able to return to training this week, while Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara, Caoimhin Kelleher and Calvin Ramsay are making progress. but are still not ready to make their return to the pitch.
“I think Diogo can train from Thursday on and Thiago I think slightly later, so we will see,” Klopp said. "Calvin is getting closer, Caoimh, I saw now only walking outside going for normal goalkeeper training. So yeah, there's light at the end of the tunnel, definitely."
Even though the transfer window closes on September 1st, Klopp does not seem too concerned about possible additions to the club, focusing instead on the challenges ahead in the EPL season.
“We are not out of the running, but the closer it gets, the more likely it is that this is who we will have (on the team),” he said. “There are some players out there that would be the right fit, but we can't force it. When it's over, I'll be really happy because we can stop thinking about it and just focus on the squad we have.”
LFC Globe Verdict
Klopp is eager for Liverpool and members of the media to move past the club's first 9-0 win since 1989, but a result like that is hard to forget. It's human nature to be overconfident after what Klopp called, “A freak scoreline”, so it will be interesting to see how things play out.
It is also good to see several players on the mend from injury which makes a move by the end of the transfer window less likely. As the Reds showed against Bournemouth, they have plenty of talent to put out on the pitch right now. They don't need to make any more moves.
