It was a tough start for Jurgen Klopp's side, who looked far from their best in the first half against the Danish champions.
Midtjylland had a couple of opportunities but the Reds managed to stem the flow, although they didn't look likely to score a goal themselves at any time, with the Reds unable to contrive a shot on target in the first half.
But the Reds made the crucial breakthrough ten minutes into the second half as Diogo Jota netted from close-range following Trent Alexander-Arnold's low cross, giving the Reds a tight 1-0 lead.
Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino all came on towards the latter stages, but the tide of the game remained largely the same as Midtjylland came close to a leveller on a couple of occasions.
But Liverpool finally sealed the game in injury time as Salah was brought down in the box, with the Egyptian converting the ensuing penalty to make it 2-0 to the Reds.
The result places Liverpool at the top of Group D, with Atalanta and Ajax playing out a 2-2 draw in the other group fixture of the night.
