Liverpool looked to be back to their best after a resounding victory at Selhurst Park prior to Christmas, but the champions endured frustration again at the weekend after being held at home by West Brom.

Despite a week's break, the Reds looked jaded in the second half as they dropped valuable points which would have seen them four clear ahead of the pack before their final clash of an unforgettable 2020.

The Reds' visit of the North East sees them face an adversary of similar ilk to Sam Allardyce, with Steve Bruce's side more than capable to thwart Liverpool's threat, as the Baggies did at Anfield.

However, the Magpies have failed to match-up with any of the traditional top six this season, losing three of their four games so far. They come into the tie winless in their last four games in all competitions, including a 1-0 defeat to Brentford in the League Cup.

While Liverpool remain unquestionable favourites for the three points, it has been an unpredictable season so far and the Reds will need to be wary of letting their guard down on a cold night up north.

Team News

Just as Liverpool appeared to be getting over the brunt of their injury issues with the return of James Milner and Xherdan Shaqiri, there was more bad news at the weekend for Joel Matip.

The Cameroonian hobbled off the pitch and is expected to be out for at least a few weeks, with youngsters Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips given another chance to compete for a spot at the back.

But all eyes are on a possible return for Thiago, who returned to full team training last week. While it was originally unclear whether the Spaniard would travel to St. James' Park, he is likely to be named on the substitutes bench.
