‣ Premier League
‣ Kick-off: 8:00pm (GMT)

Liverpool travel to the Etihad on Thursday evening knowing the significance of creating a 10 point lead over reigning champions Manchester City.

The Reds are unbeaten in their opening 20 league fixtures, navigating a tricky festive period with eight wins out eight in all competitions during December.

Whilst Jurgen Klopp's side head in to the crunch clash full of confidence, City on the other hand suffered their first three defeats of the season last month to drop behind second-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

Man City boss Pep Guardiola has called the highly-anticipated fixture a "big opportunity" for his side to claw back Liverpool's advantage, but they will need to put an end to a nine-game winning streak put together by the Reds.

In truth, anything but a defeat is a favourable result for Liverpool, who - in the worst case scenario - will still lead City by four points at the top of the table.

Klopp's side have answered every single one of their critics this campaign and the hope will be they can continue as they have done in their most important Premier League game of the season.

James Milner has been sidelined since Liverpool's 2-0 win over Wolves almost a fortnight ago, but is in line for a start having returned to training earlier this week.

The manager has no fresh injury concerns following the 5-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday, with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip still ruled out alongside long-term absentee Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

With five days since the win over the Gunners, Klopp is not expected to rotate too much and it is intriguing to see how he shapes his side against City.

Whilst there were rumours Andy Robertson could miss the game, the left-back is expected to start alongside Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dejan Lovren and Virgil van Dijk in the Liverpool back-line.

The big questions lie in midfield, with Gini Wijnaldum the only certain starter in the middle of the park. Fabinho, Milner, Jordan Henderson, Naby Keita and Xherdan Shaqiri will all be vying for a start and much is dependent on the way Klopp chooses to approach the fixture.

It is, however, expected that he returns to the tried and trusted trio of Henderson, Wijnaldum and Milner against City's dynamic midfield.

Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane will lead the line for the Reds as they look to emulate their clinical performance at the Etihad in the Champions League last season.
