Liverpool return to Premier League action this March 15th vs Spurs, knowing that they have little room for error. If the Reds want to stay in the race for the Champions League next season, three points are a must. Spurs are a team in transition, now trying to adapt to life under interim boss Igor Tudor. They remain inconsistent, showing moments of brilliance in attack, but they are also susceptible on defence to their own set of injuries and struggles on the back line
Exploit Spurs’ Defensive Crisis
Tottenham enter the match missing several top backline players. Micky van de Ven is suspended, Cristian Romero is in concussion protocol, and Destiny Udogie is also listed on the injury report. Liverpool need to take full advantage. The Reds have outscored them 9-1 during the last two matches at Anfield. Given that fact, and others, Slot says the expectations are high for this match
“I think if Tottenham would be No.1 in the league at the moment, every fan would expect us at home to win. And that is if we play against Man City, that’s when we play against Arsenal, that’s every game this club plays at home: we’re expected to win. That has nothing to do with the form of the other team, or where they are in the league or the quality they have. We can win our 1,500th [league] game at home, so expectations come from history, and history has shown that this club has been able to win a lot of games, let alone home games. So, it doesn’t matter who we play, who we face; expectations are always sky-high at this club, and that’s what we are embracing because that also means, as I said before, that this club is able to win things. That’s what we’ve done in the past few years and in history as well.”
Salah, Gakpo Key
The duo could have a big game. With Spurs dealing with backline injuries, look for Salah to make runs down the wing and play the ball across to Gakpo or Hugo Ekitike. Don’t sit back in possession. Attack, Attack Attack!!! If the Reds do this, I see another multi-goal win coming at Anfield.
Beware The Ides Of March
The match will be played on the Ides of March, so like Caesar of old, the Reds must be wary of the Spurs' surprise counterattack or lethal scoring from set pieces. Despite being only one point above the relegation zone, they have 14 set-piece strikes this season. Also like the Romas, the Spurs have had a change in leadership, although his tenure has not gone well so far. They have not picked up a single point since he took over from Thomas Frank. They will be desperate for a win, and sometimes desperation creates danger for the opponent, so Liverpool cannot take Spurs lightly.
