Liverpool vs. Leicester City: The Reds Begin Their Domestic Cup Hunt

Liverpool begin their EFL Cup campaign at home against Championship leaders Leicester City tomorrow, on Wednesday (September 27), at 19:45 PM (UK time) as they look to go on a run to earn silverware after a trophy-less year last season.

The Merseyside club has endured a positive start to the new season with five wins in their opening six league games, leaving them second in the Premier League table just two points behind reigning champions, Manchester City.

Liverpool are the most successful team in EFL Cup history with nine trophies with the most recent win coming in the 2021/22 season where they secured the domestic double with an FA Cup triumph having defeated Chelsea in both finals.

After a trophy-less season in the 2022/23 campaign, Jürgen Klopp and his side will be hungrier than ever to add more silverware to Liverpool’s trophy cabinet and the EFL Cup is a major opportunity to do that.

Luckily, they were drawn at home where Leicester City will travel to Anfield in an attempt to cause a major upset. The recently relegated side has had an impressive start to the season as they aim to return to the Premier League at the first attempt as they lead the Championship after eight games.

They’ve won seven and lost one in the league and have conceded just five goals - the least amount of any Championship club this season. 

During Leicester’s nine-year tenure in the Premier League, they enjoyed some thrilling matches with Liverpool both at Anfield and the King Power Stadium. 

In the 19 matches they faced Liverpool in the Premier League, they won just four times with their last victory coming in a 1-0 win in 2021 but later lost their last three matches before suffering relegation to the Championship.

While they lost the likes of James Maddison, Timothy Castagne, Youri Tielemans and Harvey Barnes in the summer, the club has bounced back well as they look for a swift Premier League return and perhaps a run at a domestic trophy run that will certainly become more realistic should they shock Liverpool on Wednesday night.

While Liverpool are expected to make wholesale changes for the tie, their impressive squad depth means they’ll have plenty of quality despite resting some of their top stars.

I believe Leicester City will present a good account of themselves away from home but I think Liverpool will come out with a dominant 3-0 victory to move through to the fourth round of the EFL Cup.
