Liverpool will battle Chelsea in the Premier League at Anfield on Wednesday (January 31) in a pre-cursor to the EFL Cup final next month.
Liverpool have begun 2024 in scintillating form and are unbeaten across the three competitions they’ve played in this year. The Reds most recently demolished Norwich City 5-2 in the FA Cup fourth round as they continue their hunt for silverware this season.
Even without Mohamed Salah, Jürgen Klopp’s side have kept pushing on and with the recent returns of Andy Robertson, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai, Liverpool can become even more imperious than they already are.
With an EFL Cup final looming on February 25th against Chelsea, Liverpool have the opportunity to lay a marker down against their opponents on Wednesday when they host Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the Premier League.
Liverpool and Chelsea drew 1-1 on the opening day of the season and while Liverpool have gone from strength to strength since then, it’s been a topsy-turvy season for the Blues.
Sitting ninth in the Premier League table, Chelsea have suffered eight league defeats so far but have recently turned it around as they currently sport a three-match winning streak in the Premier League with just one loss in their last five games.
Recent clashes between Liverpool and Chelsea have been less than enthralling with neither team able to beat the other in 90 minutes in their last seven fixtures.
However, Liverpool did best Chelsea twice in 2022 in both the FA Cup and EFL Cup final on penalties and have since drawn their last three games 0-0, 0-0, and 1-1.
Chelsea may not be the Chelsea of old but they always remain a dangerous opponent to Liverpool as the Reds’ inability to beat them in the Premier League demonstrates that.
However, Liverpool’s current form and the returns of a few of their top stars means I don’t see anything but a 2-0 Liverpool victory with Darwin Núñez continuing his impressive goal-scoring form with two goals on Wednesday.
