Manchester United came into Monday's match with Liverpool desperate for a win and that desperation showed from the opening whistle. While Liverpool dominated several statistical categories, the Red Devils claimed the result they needed and it was a bitter pill to swallow for Liverpool supporters who expected a comfortable win against their rivals. Manager Jürgen Klopp was disappointed with the loss but insisted there are no deeper internal issues within the squad.
“We don’t have any kind of issues. I have not had any kind of issues in the team like this,” Klopp said. “That nobody is happy after you lose a game is completely normal, but this is not an explanation, not an excuse or whatever. It's all fine there, in this department.”
The Egyptian King continues to show why he is one of the best football players in the world. His 81st-minute marker proved to be one for the record books as he has passed the legendary captain Steven Gerrard for the most career goals vs United with 10. The goal also vaults Salah past Michael Owens to 8th place on Liverpool‘s scoring list with 159.
Liverpool was without 9 first-team players for the match. While having a full squad would not have guaranteed them a victory over United, you can’t help but wonder what the result would have been if the Reds had all their players available. It’s no excuse for the disappointing loss, but it might offer some explanation for it.
The sound heard just after 10 PM BST was the moans of anguish from Liverpool fans worldwide after dropping a match they expected the club to win vs their bitter rivals. Questions about internal issues within the club have already arisen, but Klopp did his best to quash those theories in his post-match press conference,
I agree with the boss on this one, Though disappointing, the Manchester United match is just one in a long season. Plus, it’s a rivalry game and anything can happen. Liverpool will be a better side once players return from injury. So, it’s not time to hit the panic button yet, but if similar results continue, the little warning bells that are going off will soon become full-throated sirens.
