When Liverpool lost to Nottingham Forest back in November of 2025, it was one of the lowest points of the season for Arne Slot and the Reds. In fact, Liverpool have not beaten the “Tricky Trees” since March of 2023. So how do they reverse the trend come Sunday, February 22nd, particularly since Forest have gotten a boost from new boss Vítor Pereira? Here is a look at some keys to the match and the best starting XI to secure a much-needed 3 points.
Defeat The Low Block
It’s no secret that Liverpool have struggled against low-blocks this season. Arne Slot has addressed the issue many times in various press conferences, lamenting that Liverpool dominate possession but don’t generate enough chances. While Forest’s tactical strategy is a bit of a mystery with the managerial change, I expect a 5-4 1 formation.
If so, Liverpool need to attack quickly. I know Slot prefers a slower build-up play, but it takes too long and will allow Forest to hunker down in their defensive third. I would love to see some overlapping runs with quick, decisive ball movements, starting with Milos Kerkez in the back, to pull Forest out of their shape.
Finding The Pockets Of Space
Let Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai work their magic in the midfield and on the left wing. Use those pockets of space to their advantage. When Liverpool play centrally, Ryan Gravenberch or Alexis Mac Allister need to take the space provided.
When defenders close out, they can either play the ball through to Hugo Ekitiké in front of the goal or out wide to Mohamed Salah for a back post cross. The Egyptian King has already tied Steven Gerrard’s career assist mark with 92. I expect him to break it vs. Forest.
Take The Shot
Basketball great Michael Jordan once said, “You miss 100 per cent of the shots you don’t take.” To beat Forest, Liverpool are going to take some shots from outside the box. Too often this season, they have gotten within range, tried to make an extra pass in the box, and a defender sticks a foot in. Take a chance from further out.
Szoboszlai is deadly from distance, and Salah still has enough magic left in his boots to score from anywhere on the pitch. Once the ball hits the back of the net, Forest will have to come out of their low block if they want something from the game. That opens the game up and gives the Reds a chance to really pour it on.
