Players Liverpool should get rid of this summer

A summer of turnover is much needed at Liverpool I believe, with incomings and outgoings expected to be considerable.

The club must focus on completely reforming the midfield which has been allowed to rot over the last few years as well as shoring up the backline that has been well below par this season.

However, before the club brings in new blood, they must relieve themselves of the squad players who just don’t cut it at the top level anymore.

While I believe the likes of James Milner and Joel Matip should remain at the club for the experience they bring which is priceless in massive games they’ll compete in, there are certainly a few such as Roberto Firmino, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Curtis Jones and Naby Keita who have run their course at the club.

Despite coming in with massive fanfare in 2018, Keita’s injuries and availability have no doubt caused his failure at the club.

While he remains one of Liverpool’s better technical players, you just can’t rely on him showing up every single week and the level the club compete at means that reliability for players to be available for every game is of the utmost importance.

The 28-year-old has won an abundance of trophies during his tenure at the club, but fans will be disappointed that the player we saw in the Bundesliga wasn’t the one we saw wearing the special number eight shirt.

Another player I believe should leave this summer is Roberto Firmino.

While that may be contentious among Liverpool fans, his diminishing influence during games as well as his increasing injury issues means I think a break-up would be best.

Firmino is undoubtedly a Liverpool legend and will always be loved at the club but with the young attacking talent at the club, Firmino’s time on the pitch has consistently reduced in the last couple of years.

The likes of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones are two midfield options that must depart in the summer.

Chamberlain rarely makes the matchday squad when most players are fit and only gets a look into the side when the club have an injury crisis.

The midfielder is likely to leave on a free transfer this summer.

Jones is a player who started off brightly in his career but has failed to make the necessary steps to become of more importance in the Liverpool midfield.

Despite being just 22 years old, Jones already sees less time on the pitch than the likes of Harvey Elliot and Stefan Bajcetic, two players younger than the scouser.

Accepting mediocrity has been a constant criticism of Jurgen Klopp with many fans believing he is too loyal to players who can no longer perform at the highest level and this summer is the perfect time for the German to dispel those conversations.
