It was a cagey opening half-hour between both sides, with neither side looking particularly likely to score.

But Liverpool took the lead ten minutes before the break as Sadio Mane's deflected strike made its way into the back of the net thanks to a miscued clearance from Nicolas Tagliafico.

Ajax had their chances to level the scores, notably through Dusan Tadic, Quincy Promes and Davy Klaassen, but the Reds did well to keep them at bay as the game wore on.

Despite the hosts' best efforts in the final ten minutes, it was Liverpool who looked likelier of the two sides to score as they cruised to victory with a comfortable finish.

The result leaves Liverpool second in Group D following the first match-day, with Atalanta beating Midtjylland 4-0 in the other fixture of the evening.

Next up for the Reds is the visit of Sheffield United to Anfield on Saturday night as they look to kick on in their domestic campaign.
