Match Preview: Reds Ready for Hard Fight vs Hatters

21st February 2024

Liverpool and Luton Town meet on February 21 at Anfield in a rematch of what was an entertaining first encounter back in November. In that match, the Reds and the Hatters battled to a 1-1 . This is an important match for both teams as Liverpool look to expand their Premier League lead at the top of the table while Luton is in a relegation battle with Everton.

Injury Update

For much of the season, Liverpool were relatively healthy. In recent days, however, the Reds have suffered numerous knocks of varying degrees that have tested their depth. A total of seven players (See Injury List) have been ruled out for the upcoming match and Darwin Núñez is questionable. Jürgen Klopp addressed the injury during his press conference.

“As long as we have enough players available you use, the boys, you know them and you know what they can do,” he said. “There are 5,000 different ways to a football game and we only have to find one and that should always be possible, especially at where we can, if we are all ready, they can generate a dynamic where people can grow above themselves. It's just that you really become the best version of yourself and who cares then about the number on your back or the position you play?”

News And Notes

Klopp was recently named Manager of the Month (January), the 10th such award in his career. Darwin Núñez and Harvey Elliott would make their 50th and 100th appearance in a Liverpool shirt should they see the pitch vs Luton. Elliott would be the 4th youngest to reach the century mark in club history at 20 years old. Luton have never beaten Liverpool at in 18 tries.

Looking At Luton

Many pundits thought that Luton would finish last in the Premier League, but the Hatters are making a pretty terrific fight to stay in the top division.  They are right on the relegation line tied at 20 points with . They don't score many goals as Elijah Adebayo leads the team with 9, but they are a scrappy side that have tested some of the top clubs in the Premier League this season including a last-second to Manchester United the last time out.

LFC Globe Verdict

This should be a fun match. A lot is riding on the next 90 minutes of football for both teams. I want the Hatters to stay up and avoid relegation, but not at the expense of Liverpool.  The Reds had to score in stoppage time to pull out a draw in the reverse fixture. I expect a similarly close result this time with Liverpool using their home-field advantage to pull out a 2-1 win.

Where To Watch

Unfortunately, the match will not be broadcast in the UK, but American supporters can watch the action on USA Network. Canadian viewers can stream the match via fuboTV.
