Arne Slot and Liverpool face a unique situation when they travel to Molineux twice in the space of less than 70 hours to face Wolves. The first matchup is an EPL contest while the second is a 5th-round FA Cup tie. It's obvious that the boss cannot employ the same tactics twice, so what changes should he make from the first game to the second?

A Rare Occurrence

Liverpool rarely play the same team twice in a week. The last time it happened was late 2024 when the Reds beat Brighton 3-2 on October 30th and then again in the Premier League 2-1 on November 2nd. In 2020, the Reds faced a similar situation versus Arsenal, where they won a Premier League match 3-1 on September 28th, but drew with the Gunners in a cup tie 0-0 on October 1st.

Expect Changes To The Starting XI

While Slot may argue this point, I expect that he will put a bigger emphasis on the EPL match. As previously mentioned, the Reds are in a Top 4 chase, so every point is vital.  Liverpool are currently in 5th on the table, having jumped over Chelsea thanks to the weekend results. The Reds now sit just three points behind Aston Villa and Manchester United for 3rd and 4th place, respectively.

Wolves are last on the table by a wide margin, so Liverpool cannot afford to drop any points, even on the road. Therefore, I expect household names, such as Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and all the rest. On the other hand, the Wolves will likely take the opposite approach.  They are too far buried on the table to make a serious push to stay up this season, so they will put all their efforts in the FA Cup game to try to spring the upset against a heavily rotated Liverpool side.

Even with those rotations, the Red should have the upper hand with young talent like Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni ready to shine in the spotlight. If I were the boss, I would also give Federico Chiesa the start in the FA Cup game. The Italian has had some big impacts in limited minutes. I expect Liverpool to win both games rather handily, and even with massive rotations in the second game, the Reds just have too much depth and talent not to move on.

Philosophy Stays The Same

Even though there will be massive changes to the starting lineup for the FA Cup match, don't expect the Reds to change tactics too much. They will still employ the 4-2-3-1 formation that has seen so much success in their recent run of good results.  Liverpool were more aggressive in their last match, and it resulted in a 5-2 win

I expect that aggression to carry over, and I'm looking forward to seeing the youngsters have a go in the match on March 6th. An aggressive style mixed with potential youthful mistakes could lead to a lot of goals being scored. While it might not be a master class of the beautiful game, it will be must-watch viewing for football fans who like offence. In all honesty, I am looking forward to that match the most.

Have Your Say

What are your thoughts? Should Slot go with all experience in one game and all youth in the other? Or should he provide a mix of both to balance everything out? These situations don't come about very often, so now is your chance to step into the boss’s shoes. You can use our lineup predictor to make your choice for the EPL match and then just hit reset for a clean slate in the FA Cup.  Have fun and go, Reds!!
