Jacob
4th February 2023

Wolverhampton had only scored 12 goals in 20 EPL matches this season, but against Liverpool, they found their form, scoring 3 times while sending the Reds to another shocking defeat, 3-0

An own goal by Joel Matip in the 5th minute was an early sign of what would turn out to be a nightmarish match for Liverpool and that was only the start. Craig Dawson added another goal in the 12th minute and Ruben Neves delivered the death nail in the 71st minute to account for the 3-0 final.

First Half

Alisson was called into action early as he made a save in the 3rd minute, but an own goal from Joel Matip in the 5th minute contributed to the tough start for Liverpool. banged in another goal as new signee Craig  Dwsonson sent a rebound to give the home team a 2-0 lead inside of 12 minutes.

Darwin Núñez put a shot on frame for Liverpool in the 14th minute, but Jose Sa made the save. Mohamed Salah put a shot high moments later as Liverpool began to find their footing in the match. Alisson made another key save in the 26th minute and the Reds garnered plenty of decent chances in the final third during the first half-hour of the match, but they could not finish. They could not generate any offence in the final portion of the first half either as they were down 2-0 at the break.

Second Half

Liverpool earned a pair of corners in the early moments of the second half. Naby Keita's shot in the 51st-minute shot looked destined for goal but it was blocked. In fact, the Reds battered the defence with chance after chance until the hour mark.

Salah put a shot just wide in the 62nd minute, squandering a golden opportunity. Darwin Núñez had a clean run at goal in the 67th minute, but Sa made a big save. With all the pressure Liverpool was putting on the opposing goal, the counter-attack was always a possibility and the Reds fell victim to it in the 71st minute  Ruben Neves was there for an easy finish thanks to a nice assist from Adama Traoré.

The Reds did not mount a serious threat the rest of the way falling yet again from Anfield.

The Wrong Side Of History…Again

All too often this season, clubs are finding success against Liverpool, breaking a long run of futility against the Reds. Such was also the case today. This marked the first Wolves win vs Liverpool in League play since 2010 and the first time they have scored 3 goals in a match all season.

Scoring & Road Woes Continue

Liverpool are still stuck on two wins away from this season in league play. They have also not scored in their last 3 EPL matches dating back to a 3-1 at on January 2nd.

LFC Globe Verdict

And we thought the first Brighton match was bad. The Reds were beaten again by an all-to-familiar 3-0 scoreline, this time by a Wolves club who were in the relegation zone before the match. That's not to say Wolverhampton did not play well. They did, but Liverpool half to play better. The Reds did dominate the match for about 30 minutes in the second half, but they usually play like that for a full 90, If this result was just a one-off, there would not be much to worry about, but these results are becoming a trend that needs to end quickly.

Naby Keita played well for Liverpool. He kept working himself into good spots to finish, but the final execution was a bit lacking, but the same could be said of the entire team today
