Liverpool vs Barcelona
‣ 7 May 2019
‣ Champions League
‣ Semi-Final, 2nd Leg
‣ KO: 8pm (BST)
Liverpool welcome Barcelona to Anfield for the second-leg of their Champions League semi-final tie as they look to salvage hopes of reaching the final by overturning a 3-0 deficit from the first-leg last week.
The result at Camp Nou didn’t reflect the performance Jurgen Klopp’s side put in and they would be right to feel miffed at the outcome. However, they could rekindle hopes of reaching the final in the unlikeliest of ways, should they deliver a flawless showing tonight.
It will be a huge task for the Reds, made even more difficult by the untimely absence of forwards Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino. Meanwhile, Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde rested most his first-team at the weekend to keep them fresh for the meeting.
Tonight’s fixture is Liverpool’s fourth in twelve days and Klopp is urging his side to dig in deep and give it their all, insisting if they are unable to progress, they should at least “fail in the most beautiful way.”
It may be easier said than done, but keeping the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Philippe Coutinho quiet will be crucial for the Reds, with just one Barcelona goal putting the onus on Liverpool to score at least five on the night.
It promises to be a captivating night under the lights at Anfield; could it be another famous European night to add to the collection, if history is any indicator, or will Barca prove to be unsurmountable?
Liverpool have been dealt a huge blow since the first-leg last week, with Firmino and Salah both ruled out due to injury.
Firmino, who featured for 11 minutes as a substitute at Camp Nou, missed the trip to Newcastle at the weekend and remains a doubt for Liverpool’s final league fixture against Wolves on Sunday.
The Brazilian’s loss was compounded by the head injury suffered by Salah in Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Newcastle, with the Egyptian having to rightly stay on the sidelines for this crucial clash due concussion protocol.
Daniel Sturridge started in Firmino’s absence on Saturday, however the striker is unlikely to play two games in quick succession. Divock Origi, match-winner against the Magpies, has been tipped to start in his place on Tuesday night.
The Belgian forward is likely to be joined by Xherdan Shaqiri, who could be in line for his Liverpool start in four months after coming on as a substitute and providing the assist for Origi’s late header.
Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold grabbed another two assists on Saturday and he should return from the off after being named a substitute in the first-leg, whilst Joel Matip is likely to replace Dejan Lovren from the starting eleven that faced Newcastle.
