Arne Slot has been sacked by Liverpool. In a statement released by the club on the afternoon of May 30th, it was announced that the Reds had relieved the Dutch manager of his duties. effective immediately.

“We have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward,” Liverpool ownership said in a statement. “It must be stressed that this is not a decision which has been reached lightly, anything but.”

Slot’s two-year tenure at Anfield was certainly full of ups and downs. He captured the EPL title in 24-5, along with reaching the Carabao Cup final. This season, however, was fraught with inconsistencies as the club failed to lift any trophies. They finished fifth on the table and did not secure Champions League qualification until the season’s final day with a draw vs. Brentford. Slot finishes his career on Merseyside with 66 wins, 28 losses, and 19 draws.

In the released statement, the club also acknowledged and expressed gratitude for Slot’s accomplishments.

“We would like to take this opportunity to place on record our appreciation for Arne, who will always hold a special place in the history of this football club as the coach who delivered Liverpool’s 20th league title. That accomplishment – made all the more remarkable as it arrived in his very first season in charge – was built on outstanding coaching and leadership every single day. He also helped guide the club through one of the most difficult periods imaginable following the loss of Diogo (Jota). The compassion and humanity he showed throughout that time said a great deal about him as a person. As such, we can only wish Arne well in the next stage of his coaching career, with our expectation being that he will continue to be successful. We do so in the knowledge that his Liverpool legacy is intact and will become yet more meaningful in the years and decades to come.”

LFC Globe Verdict

It’s hard to say if this was the right move or not. On the one hand, Liverpool did experience a massive dropoff from winning the title last season and he did alienate players like Salah. On the other hand, there were extenuating circumstances and a lot of injuries during the campaign. Did he deserve a fresh start next? I’m not sure. It was a tough call and I am glad I was not the one making it.
