Liverpool earned a chaotic 4-3 victory over Leeds United as they begun their Premier League title defence.

It was an opening fixture that will undoubtedly be remembered for quite a while.

Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead with an arrowing penalty after Robin Koch's handball.

Leeds struck back immediately through winger Jack Harrison, who eluded Trent Alexander-Arnold and fired past Alisson in goal.

Virgil van Dijk's header in the 20th minute restored Liverpool's lead. But the visitors showed no signs of letting up as Patrick Bamford made it 2-2 following a mistake by goalscorer Van Dijk.

Salah gave Liverpool the lead at half-time with a powerful strike into the top corner. The Reds defence continued showing signs of rustiness, however, which Leeds took advantage of once more.

Mateusz Klich darted into the box unmarked and finished excellently across Alisson's goal, leaving the Reds with a little under 25 minutes to respond.

As they did on so many occasions last year, the champions found a way as Salah netted his hat-trick and secured opening-day victory with another spot-kick.
