Jurgen Klopp admitted Salzburg caused his side plenty of problems on Tuesday afternoon, albeit the Reds made glaring mistakes for both of Salzburg’s goals.
An error by Fabinho in the opening three minutes saw Patson Daka run through and finish past Alisson. The Zambian repeated the feat again ten minutes later following poor play by Joe Gomez, who lost the ball and found himself out of position.
Liverpool didn’t seem to have an answer for much of the game, with Daka having numerous chances to grab a hat-trick and make it 3-0.
Klopp, who had en entirely different starting eleven on the pitch following the hour mark, soon saw his fringe players step up to the mark and do what the first-team could not.
An excellent give-and-go between James Milner and Takumi Minamino saw the former set Brewster up for his first strike: a well-taken finish under pressure from a couple of Salzburg defenders. While he finished his first with unerring accuracy, his second was all the more clinical.
An attempted clearance by the Salzburg goalkeeper bounced Brewster’s way at the edge of the box, with the promising youngster making a challenging half-volley look simple with an outstanding finish to make it 2-2.
It was a difficult afternoon for the Reds, who looked leggy for much of the game. But it was undoubtedly a valuable experience against a tricky side, which should put them in good stead heading into Saturday’s Community Shield against Arsenal.
