Liverpool needed all three points against familiar foes Chelsea, with manager Jurgen Klopp telling reporters that his players will not be affected by the unfortunate meeting between the two sides five years ago.
Ahead of the game, supporters, players and staff at Anfield paid their respects for the 96 victims of the Hillsborough tragedy on the eve of its 30th anniversary.
Despite dominating much of the proceedings, Liverpool failed to create many clear-cut chances in the opening half whilst the visitors threatened themselves on occasion.
The Reds emerged after half-time with a focused determination and were rewarded just six minutes in to the restart. Sadio Mane nodded home Jordan Henderson’s dink to the far-post to give Liverpool the all-important break-through.
The Reds were in dreamland just two minutes later as Salah scored a goal-of-the-season contender from 25 yards out. The Egyptian unleashed a powerful drive that smashed in to the back of the net, much to the delight of a raucous Anfield crowd.
Klopp’s side held on to earn all three points, answering any questions about their mentality after City had put all the pressure on them ahead of the game.
