Liverpool host Nottingham Forest for the home opener of the 2026-27 season. The Reds struggled against the counterattack in a 2-2 draw vs. Newcastle, so I expect Andoni Iraola to make some changes on the backline and shift some player positioning in the midfield.
The Changes
The biggest change I foresee is putting Wataru Endō on the backline in place of Milos Kerkez. While Kerkez is a fine footballer, his natural inclination is to push forward and attack. Endō is a workmanlike player who always seems to be in the right position to snuff out dangerous chances from the opposition. If the Reds need a late goal, I could see Kerkez coming on as a sub to provide more punch going forward.
The other change I predict is not a change in personnel but one in positioning. I think the boss will put Cody Gakpo in the center of the park as an attacking midfielder and slide Florian Wirtz out wide on the left. Gakpo has a history of playing centre forward on occasion, so this change is quite plausible.
Other Possibilities
Iraola spoke about improving discipline in the midfield in his press conference today, but honestly, I don’t see the boss making any changes in the midfield from the last match. I think Victor Muñoz and Alexis Mac Allister made an impact coming off the bench, so that should be the game plan once again.
LFC Globe Verdict
This is the best possible lineup to address the defensive vulnerabilities that popped up vs Newcastle. In addition, it better utilises Cody Gakpo’s skill set. Of course, the Reds could play better just by getting a boost from the crowd at Anfield. Either way, I’m expecting three points for the Reds.
