Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle
Liverpool, who were forced to face the Kop in the first half, started the game sluggishly, with their international exploits seemingly catching up with them inside the opening 10 minutes.
They paid the price early on as Jetro Willems sent a stunning strike past goalkeeper Adrian to give Newcastle a shock lead at Anfield.
The Reds took a while to get into their rhythm, but once they did, they dominated the ball and began to ask questions of the Magpies defence.
They got their leveller just before the half-hour mark as Andy Robertson cut back for Sadio Mane inside the box, who made space for the shot and fired the ball into the far corner with a delightful finish.
Origi then picked up an ankle knock, with Firmino coming on to replace the Belgian much earlier than anticipated.
The Brazilian’s impact was instant as he forced Christian Atsu into an error in his own half. Firmino picked the ball up and sent in Mane, who was beaten to the ball by Martin Dubravka. However, the Newcastle goalkeeper fumbled his interception, with Mane poking the ball home from close-range.
Liverpool, as expected, dominated the ball in the second half, albeit without creating too many clear-cut chances.
With a little under 20 minutes to go, Firmino was involved once again as Mohamed Salah charged towards the Newcastle box, playing a give and go with the Reds forward – who returned with an outstanding flick – and clinically finishing across Dubravka to make it 3-1.
The Reds continue their winning run at the start of the Premier League season, sitting in first place with maximum points from their first five games.
