The onus was on Jurgen Klopp's side to deliver after Manchester City earned three points against Tottenham to head back to the league summit.

Despite dominating much of proceedings, the Reds finally made a break-through just before the hour mark as Gini Wijnaldum smashed in Trent Alexander-Arnold's low corner to give Liverpool the lead.

With 10 minutes left on the clock, Mohamed Salah was judged to have been pulled down in the box by Sean Morrison and James Milner stepped up to convert the ensuing penalty.

The Reds go back above Man City in the table with 88 points, the most they have ever achieved in a Premier League season.

Speaking after the win, Klopp said his side were worthy of setting such a record for the club, although the focus remains on the title race with City.

Pep Guardiola's side are two points below Liverpool and have a game in hand on the Reds as they face Manchester United on Wednesday night.
