Even though it was Liverpool who needed to get off to a fast start, it was PSG that earned a corner in the opening 3 minutes, forcing Mamardashvilli into a save. Alexander Isak then forced a save from a corner in the 7th minute as the match was open from the start.

Mamardashvilli punched away a dangerous ball moments later, and Liverpool could not finish off a bouncing ball in the penalty area around the quarter-hour mark. Ryan Gravenberch made a thundering run through the middle of the pitch later in the half and found Isak for the near-finish, but he was whistled for offside.

Hugo Ekitike was stretchered off with an injury, replaced by Salah. Salah nearly scored on the restart. The PSG keeper made the save, and the follow-up shot from Virgil van Dijk was saved off the line. Salah earned a corner later in the half, but the teams had to settle for a 0-0 score headed to halftime.
